About This Medicine

Bettamousse is a topical corticosteroid foam preparation containing betamethasone valerate 0.1% (as the active ingredient equivalent to 0.122% betamethasone valerate), specifically formulated for application to the scalp. It is manufactured by Crawford Healthcare and is used to treat inflammatory scalp conditions including scalp psoriasis, seborrhoeic dermatitis of the scalp, and other corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses affecting the scalp and hairline. The foam vehicle is a significant advantage over conventional cream or ointment formulations when treating the scalp, as it spreads easily through the hair, dries quickly, and does not leave the hair feeling greasy.

Scalp Psoriasis and Seborrhoeic Dermatitis

Scalp psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory condition in which the scalp skin cells multiply far more rapidly than normal, leading to the build-up of thick, silvery-white scales, redness, and often significant itching. The condition frequently extends beyond the hairline onto the forehead and behind the ears. Seborrhoeic dermatitis of the scalp (severe dandruff) is characterised by flaking, scaling, and inflammation driven by an abnormal response to the yeast Malassezia, which colonises oily skin. Both conditions cause considerable distress and can be difficult to treat in individuals with thick or long hair, where traditional ointments and creams are unwieldy.

Why a Foam Formulation?

The foam delivery system used in Bettamousse allows betamethasone valerate to be distributed evenly across the scalp surface without requiring the hair to be parted or wet. The foam collapses on contact with skin and hair to release a thin film of the active preparation. Clinical studies have demonstrated that foam formulations of betamethasone achieve comparable efficacy to solution and lotion formulations while being significantly more acceptable to patients due to their cosmetic properties, which in turn improves treatment adherence.

General Safety Considerations

As a potent topical corticosteroid, Bettamousse carries the same risk profile as other betamethasone preparations, and prolonged or excessive use should be avoided. It should be used for the minimum duration required to control symptoms.

Usage & Dosage

How to Apply Bettamousse

Apply Bettamousse (betamethasone foam) to the affected areas of the scalp and hairline twice daily (morning and evening). Hold the can upside down and dispense a small amount of foam into the palm or directly onto the scalp. Massage gently into the scalp skin, applying just enough for a thin, even coverage. Wash hands thoroughly after use.

Keep the aerosol away from heat, sparks, and open flames, it is flammable in aerosol form (though safe once applied to skin). Do not inhale the foam.

Treatment Duration

Use Bettamousse for the minimum time needed to bring the scalp condition under control, typically two to four weeks. If there is no improvement after four weeks, see your doctor for a review. Do not use continuously for prolonged periods without clinical oversight.

Bettamousse is applied twice daily to affected areas of the scalp. The quantity used should be the minimum needed to cover the affected area. There is no specific guidance on the number of grams applied per application, but a practical guideline is to use the smallest amount that provides adequate coverage and cosmetically acceptable results.

Treatment courses are typically two to four weeks in duration. If the condition has responded well, the frequency of application may be reduced to once daily for a further one to two weeks before discontinuing, to reduce the risk of rebound.

No formal dose adjustment is required for elderly patients, but as the skin becomes thinner with age, the risk of skin atrophy is greater and shorter treatment courses are preferred. Bettamousse should be used with caution in children; it is not generally recommended for routine use in children under 12 without specialist dermatological advice because of the risk of systemic corticosteroid absorption through the scalp. Patients with hepatic or renal impairment should use topical corticosteroids with caution if extensive areas are being treated, but in most patients applying Bettamousse to the scalp, systemic absorption is limited.

Side Effects

Bettamousse is generally well tolerated when used correctly on the scalp for short treatment courses. Side effects are similar to those of other topical betamethasone preparations.

Common Side Effects

The following are reported with use of Bettamousse:

  • Folliculitis (inflammation of hair follicles) at application sites
  • Local burning or stinging when first applied
  • Pruritus (itching) at the application site, usually mild and transient
  • Skin dryness or peeling at the scalp margins
  • Hair loss (alopecia) in some patients with prolonged use
  • Local skin discomfort or sensitivity

Serious Side Effects

The following require medical assessment:

  • Scalp or skin infections: betamethasone suppresses local immune defence and can worsen bacterial, fungal, and viral infections, including tinea capitis (ringworm of the scalp) and folliculitis; if infection develops during treatment, discontinue and seek medical advice
  • HPA axis suppression with extensive or prolonged use: signs include unusual fatigue, weight gain, and loss of appetite, indicating systemic absorption of sufficient corticosteroid to suppress adrenal function
  • Skin atrophy at the scalp margins and forehead if the preparation spreads onto thin facial skin
  • Eye complications if the foam accidentally enters the eyes, rinse thoroughly with clean water

Warnings & Precautions

Flammability

Bettamousse is supplied as a pressurised aerosol foam that is highly flammable. The can must be kept away from all sources of heat, sparks, open flames, and electrical equipment. It must not be punctured or incinerated even when empty. After application, the foam is no longer flammable, but users must ensure that the foam has fully dried on the scalp before using a hair dryer or approaching any heat source.

Eyes and Mucous Membranes

Care must be taken during application to avoid contact with the eyes, as betamethasone applied repeatedly around the eyes can increase intraocular pressure and, with prolonged exposure, contribute to glaucoma or cataract formation. If the foam accidentally enters the eye, the eye should be rinsed thoroughly with clean water. The foam should not be inhaled.

Children, Pregnancy, and Prolonged Use

Bettamousse is not recommended for routine use in children under 12 years without specialist advice. In pregnancy, it should be used with caution and only when the benefit clearly outweighs any risk; the scalp has a relatively good absorption capacity, and betamethasone can cross the placenta in significant amounts if extensive areas are treated. Prolonged or repeated treatment courses without adequate medical review are associated with cumulative systemic exposure to corticosteroid. Patients requiring ongoing treatment should be reviewed regularly by a GP or dermatologist.

Contraindications

Bettamousse must not be used in the following circumstances:

  • Known hypersensitivity to betamethasone valerate or any excipient in the aerosol formulation
  • Scalp or skin infections caused by bacteria, fungi, or viruses at the application site (including tinea capitis, impetigo, or herpes)
  • Acne vulgaris or rosacea affecting the scalp margin or forehead
  • Widespread scalp application in children under 12 without specialist supervision
  • Application near the eyes without care to avoid contact
  • Use during pregnancy without specific medical advice and clear clinical justification
  • Application to broken, ulcerated, or raw scalp skin
  • Psoriasis being treated with widespread potent steroid application (risk of rebound and systemic effect)

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Bettamousse differ from other scalp treatments for psoriasis?
Bettamousse is a betamethasone valerate 0.1% foam, classifying it as a potent corticosteroid that acts quickly to reduce scalp inflammation and scaling. Unlike coal tar shampoos or salicylic acid preparations, which work more slowly and are primarily descaling agents, Bettamousse directly suppresses the inflammatory process driving scalp psoriasis. The foam formulation is easier to apply through thick or long hair than creams or ointments and leaves less residue, making it more acceptable for daily use.
How quickly will Bettamousse clear scalp psoriasis?
Most patients with scalp psoriasis treated with Bettamousse begin to notice a reduction in itching, scaling, and redness within the first week of twice-daily application. Significant clearance is typically seen within two to four weeks. The foam does not permanently cure psoriasis -- it controls flares -- and most patients require repeated treatment courses over time. If there is no meaningful improvement after four weeks, a dermatological review is recommended.
Can Bettamousse be used every day long-term?
Bettamousse should not be used continuously for extended periods without medical supervision. Potent topical corticosteroids used on the scalp over long periods can cause skin atrophy at the margins, folliculitis, and contribute to systemic corticosteroid exposure. Treatment courses of two to four weeks are recommended, with breaks between courses. Your GP or dermatologist can advise on a maintenance strategy, which may include alternating with a milder preparation or using coal tar shampoo between courses.
Is Bettamousse safe near a flame or hot styling tools?
The pressurised aerosol foam is highly flammable before it dries on the scalp, so the can must be kept away from heat sources, open flames, and sparks. After the foam has been applied and allowed to dry fully on the scalp, it is no longer flammable and hair styling tools can be used. You should wait until the foam has completely dried -- typically a few minutes -- before using a hair dryer or straighteners.
