About This Medicine
Celluvisc is a preservative-free lubricant eye drop solution containing carmellose sodium 1%, used to relieve the symptoms of dry eye syndrome (keratoconjunctivitis sicca). It is available without a prescription and is suitable for both short-term symptomatic relief and long-term daily management of dry eyes.
What Is Dry Eye Syndrome?
Dry eye syndrome is a very common condition in which the eyes do not produce enough natural tears, or the tears that are produced evaporate too quickly, leaving the surface of the eye inadequately lubricated. This results in symptoms including a persistent gritty or burning sensation, eye redness, blurred vision that improves with blinking, sensitivity to light, and a paradoxical increased tearing in response to irritation. Dry eyes are particularly common in older adults, contact lens wearers, people who spend extended periods looking at screens, and those who take certain medicines such as antihistamines, antidepressants, or blood pressure treatments.
How Celluvisc Works
Celluvisc works by supplementing the natural tear film with a viscous lubricating solution that coats and protects the surface of the eye. Carmellose sodium (also known as carboxymethylcellulose or CMC) is a cellulose-derived polymer that mimics the mucin and water components of natural tears. Its viscoelastic properties allow it to spread evenly across the corneal surface with each blink, reducing friction between the eyelid and the eye and providing sustained moisture and comfort.
Because Celluvisc is preservative-free, it is available in single-use disposable unit-dose vials (minims). This is an important advantage over preserved eye drops, which contain antimicrobial additives that can themselves cause irritation with long-term use or in patients with sensitive eyes, and which may damage soft contact lenses. The preservative-free formulation makes Celluvisc particularly suitable for patients who need to use lubricant drops frequently throughout the day.
Usage & Dosage
How to Use Celluvisc
Celluvisc comes in single-use unit-dose vials. To use, twist off the top of the vial, tilt your head back slightly, gently pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket, and instil one to two drops into the corner of the eye. Blink gently to distribute the solution across the eye surface. Use a new vial for each application and discard any remaining solution afterwards — the preparation contains no preservative and must not be stored once opened.
Wearing Contact Lenses
If you wear soft contact lenses, remove them before using Celluvisc and wait at least 15 minutes before putting them back in. The viscous formulation can coat the lens surface and affect comfort. Hard lenses are generally less affected, but it is still advisable to apply the drops without lenses in place.
Celluvisc can be used as often as needed throughout the day. For very frequent use (more than six times daily), consider preservative-free unit-dose drops to avoid any cumulative irritation.
The recommended dose of Celluvisc for adults and the elderly is one to two drops instilled into the affected eye or eyes as needed throughout the day. There is no strict upper limit on daily frequency of use, as the product is non-toxic and does not cause systemic effects even with frequent application.
For children, Celluvisc may be used under medical or optometric guidance. The dose and frequency are the same as in adults, but the underlying cause of dry eyes in children should be investigated.
If only one eye is affected, Celluvisc should be used in that eye only. If both eyes are affected, use a separate single-dose vial for each eye if possible, or use the same vial for both eyes consecutively before discarding. Because Celluvisc is preservative-free, opened vials must be discarded immediately after a single use session and must never be stored.
Celluvisc can be used alongside other ocular preparations. If using more than one eye drop, leave at least five minutes between each type of drop to allow the first preparation time to be absorbed before the second is instilled.
Side Effects
Common Side Effects
Celluvisc is very well tolerated. Mild effects that may occur immediately after instillation include:
- Brief blurred vision after applying the drop (due to the thick, viscous nature of the solution — this settles within a minute or two)
- Mild stinging or burning on first contact
- A slightly sticky feeling around the eyelids
When to Seek Advice
These effects are normal and temporary. However, if you develop persistent eye pain, increased redness, worsening discharge, or changes in vision that do not clear quickly, stop using Celluvisc and see a doctor or optometrist. These symptoms may indicate an eye infection or other condition that needs specific treatment beyond lubricating drops.
Warnings & Precautions
Contact Lens Use
Remove contact lenses before using Celluvisc and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them. Although the preservative-free formulation is compatible with contact lenses, using eye drops with lenses in situ may impair comfort and lens performance, and it is good practice to remove lenses for eye drop administration.
Driving and Visual Blurring
Celluvisc is a viscous solution that may cause temporary blurring of vision immediately after instillation. You should not drive or operate machinery until your vision has fully cleared. This effect is brief, typically resolving within a few minutes, but it should be taken into account when timing drop use during activities that require clear vision.
When to Seek Medical Advice
Dry eye syndrome is a benign and very common condition that can usually be managed with lubricant drops. However, persistent or worsening symptoms, redness, discharge, pain, or any change in vision should prompt assessment by an optometrist or doctor, as these may indicate an alternative diagnosis such as an eye infection, corneal ulcer, or inflammatory eye disease. Celluvisc is a symptomatic treatment only and does not address the underlying cause of severe or pathological dry eye.
Contraindications
Celluvisc is suitable for most people and has very few absolute contraindications. However, it should not be used in the following circumstances:
- Known hypersensitivity or allergy to carmellose sodium or any other ingredient in the formulation
- Use while wearing soft contact lenses (remove lenses before application)
- As a substitute for prescribed eye drops in active eye infections or inflammatory eye disease (Celluvisc is a lubricant only)
- If the eye drop vial has already been opened and stored for re-use (each vial is single-use only)
- In patients with eye injuries or post-surgical eyes unless specifically approved by the treating ophthalmologist
