Medical Information
About This Medicine
Clobex contains clobetasol propionate 0.05% in a shampoo formulation designed for the treatment of scalp psoriasis and other severe inflammatory scalp conditions. It delivers a very potent topical corticosteroid in a format specifically suited to hair-bearing skin.
Why a shampoo formulation?
Traditional creams and ointments are difficult to apply to the scalp because of hair, and many patients find them cosmetically unacceptable. The Clobex shampoo is applied briefly (15 minutes) and then washed out, leaving no residue while still delivering an effective dose of corticosteroid to the inflamed scalp.
Potency considerations
Clobetasol propionate is the most potent topical steroid available. The shampoo formulation reduces total exposure time compared with leave-on products, providing a degree of safety margin. Nevertheless, treatment should be kept as short as possible and limited to the recommended duration.
Usage & Dosage
How to Use Clobex Shampoo
Apply Clobex (clobetasol propionate 0.05%) shampoo directly to the dry scalp, spreading it over the affected areas with your fingertips. Leave it in place for 15 minutes, then add a small amount of water to work it into a lather before rinsing thoroughly. Do not use on wet hair — applying to a dry scalp ensures better contact with the skin.
Use once daily for a maximum of four consecutive weeks. Most patients see significant improvement within two weeks. After completing a course, review with your doctor before repeating treatment.
Scalp Application Only
Clobex shampoo is intended for the scalp only. Avoid contact with the face and other areas of skin. If it accidentally contacts facial skin or the eyes, rinse immediately with water. Do not cover the scalp with a shower cap or tight wrap after application, as this increases absorption.
Apply to affected scalp areas once daily for up to four weeks. No more than one capful (approximately 30 ml) per application. Do not exceed four consecutive weeks of treatment.
Side Effects
Common Side Effects
- Scalp irritation, burning, or stinging
- Scalp dryness
- Headache
- Folliculitis (inflamed hair follicles)
With Prolonged Use
Clobetasol propionate is a very potent corticosteroid. Although the brief contact time of the shampoo formulation reduces the risk compared with leave-on preparations, prolonged or excessive use can still cause skin thinning, reduced skin integrity, and adrenal suppression (if enough corticosteroid is absorbed systemically). Do not use for more than four consecutive weeks without medical review. If you notice increased hair loss, scalp infections, or a spreading rash, stop and see your doctor.
Warnings & Precautions
Do not use for longer than four weeks. Very potent steroids applied to the scalp can lead to systemic absorption, particularly if the skin barrier is compromised by psoriasis. Avoid contact with the eyes, face, and groin during application.
Not a regular shampoo
Clobex is a medicated treatment, not a daily shampoo. It should be used for active flares only and not as a maintenance treatment.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in scalp infections (fungal, bacterial, or viral), and known hypersensitivity to clobetasol propionate or any excipient.
