About This Medicine

Condyline contains podophyllotoxin, a cytotoxic agent used for the self-treatment of external genital warts (condylomata acuminata). It works by preventing cell division in the wart tissue, causing the wart to necrose and eventually fall off. Condyline allows patients to treat their warts at home, avoiding repeated clinic visits for cryotherapy or other destructive treatments.

Usage & Dosage

How to Apply Condyline

Apply Condyline (podophyllotoxin 0.5% solution) carefully to each wart using the applicator provided. Apply twice daily (morning and evening) for three consecutive days, then stop for four rest days. This seven-day period forms one treatment cycle. Repeat for up to four cycles if needed. Apply only to the surface of the wart itself, and take care to avoid the surrounding healthy skin as much as possible.

Condyline works by destroying the abnormal tissue of the wart. Some local inflammation and discomfort during treatment is normal and indicates the medicine is working.

After Application

Allow the solution to dry before contact with clothing. Wash your hands thoroughly after application. Do not apply to internal surfaces, the urethra, rectum, vagina, or any mucous membrane. Do not apply to large areas of warts at once — if you have extensive warts, speak to a clinic or sexual health service for guidance.

Apply twice daily for 3 days, then 4 days off. Maximum 4 treatment cycles. Do not treat more than an area of 4 cm squared at one time. Maximum 50 individual warts per session.

Side Effects

Common Local Reactions

Local skin reactions are expected and indicate the treatment is active:

  • Burning and stinging at the application site
  • Redness and inflammation of the treated area
  • Erosion, blistering, or shallow ulceration of the wart tissue
  • Pain at the treatment site

Managing Side Effects

These reactions are a normal part of how Condyline works. Allow the treated area to heal during the four rest days before the next cycle. If reactions are very severe or spread significantly beyond the wart, stop treatment and see a doctor. Do not apply to open skin or active erosions. If the warts do not respond after four cycles, a different treatment approach should be discussed with a healthcare professional.

Warnings & Precautions

Apply precisely to the wart only; avoid contact with surrounding healthy skin. Do not use on internal genital surfaces, in the vagina, cervix, or anus. Not suitable during pregnancy.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in pregnancy, breastfeeding, children, open wounds adjacent to the warts, and known hypersensitivity to podophyllotoxin.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many treatment cycles will I need?
Many patients see significant clearance after one to two cycles. Up to four cycles (each comprising three days of treatment followed by four rest days) may be needed for complete clearance. If warts persist after four cycles, consult your prescriber for alternative treatment.
