About This Medicine
Cyklokapron contains tranexamic acid, an antifibrinolytic agent used to reduce heavy menstrual bleeding and to prevent or treat bleeding in various clinical situations. It works by blocking the conversion of plasminogen to plasmin, thereby preventing the breakdown of blood clots. For heavy periods, tranexamic acid reduces menstrual blood loss by approximately 40 to 50% and is taken only during the days of heavy bleeding.
Usage & Dosage
How to Take Cyklokapron
For heavy periods, take Cyklokapron (tranexamic acid) tablets three to four times daily during the days of heavy menstrual bleeding, usually for three to five days. Swallow the tablets whole with water. Start taking them as soon as heavy bleeding begins, not before.
Cyklokapron reduces blood loss by preventing the breakdown of clots. It is taken only on the days of heavy flow, not throughout the entire cycle. If your periods remain very heavy despite treatment, speak to your doctor, as further investigation may be needed.
Heavy menstrual bleeding: 1 g (two 500 mg tablets) three to four times daily for up to 4 days during menstruation. Maximum: 4 g daily.
Side Effects
Common Side Effects
Common side effects include:
- Nausea
- Diarrhoea
- Abdominal pain or cramps
- Headache
These are usually mild and related to the dose. Taking tablets with food can help reduce stomach discomfort. Cyklokapron should not be used in women with a history of blood clots (venous thromboembolism), as tranexamic acid promotes clotting and may increase this risk.
Warnings & Precautions
Use with caution in patients with a history of thromboembolic disease. If visual disturbances occur (changes in colour vision, blurred vision), discontinue and consult your prescriber. Maintain adequate hydration.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in active thromboembolic disease, history of convulsions, severe renal impairment, and known hypersensitivity to tranexamic acid.
