About This Medicine
Desloratadine is a non-sedating antihistamine for allergic rhinitis and chronic urticaria. As the active metabolite of loratadine, it works without requiring hepatic conversion, potentially offering a more consistent response across patients with varying liver enzyme activity. Generic desloratadine provides the same clinical benefit as branded Aerius or Neoclarityn at a lower cost.
Usage & Dosage
How to Take Desloratadine
Take one tablet daily, with or without food. Desloratadine can be taken at any time of day, though taking it at the same time each day helps maintain consistent symptom control. The effect typically begins within one hour and lasts a full 24 hours. For seasonal allergies, treatment can be started before the pollen season begins and continued throughout. For perennial rhinitis or chronic urticaria, treatment may be ongoing as long as symptoms persist. Do not double up on doses if you miss one; simply take your next dose at the usual time.
Adults and children over 12: 5 mg once daily. Children 6 to 11: 2.5 mg daily. Children 1 to 5: 1.25 mg daily (oral solution).
Side Effects
Common Side Effects
Desloratadine is well tolerated by the majority of patients. Unlike first-generation antihistamines, it does not cross the blood-brain barrier and is therefore classed as non-sedating. The most commonly reported side effects are mild:
- Headache
- Dry mouth
- Fatigue
Serious Side Effects
Severe allergic reactions to desloratadine are very rare. Seek immediate medical attention if you develop facial swelling, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or a generalised rash shortly after taking the tablet. Heart palpitations and tachycardia have been reported rarely. If you experience a fast or irregular heartbeat, contact your prescriber.
Warnings & Precautions
Dose adjustment in severe renal impairment. Although non-sedating, rare cases of drowsiness have been reported.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in known hypersensitivity to desloratadine or loratadine.
