About This Medicine
Dovobet (also known as Daivobet) combines calcipotriol (a vitamin D analogue) with betamethasone dipropionate (a potent corticosteroid) for the topical treatment of psoriasis. Calcipotriol normalises excessive skin cell proliferation, while betamethasone provides rapid anti-inflammatory relief. The combination is more effective than either component alone and is available as ointment, gel, and foam formulations. The gel and foam are particularly suited to scalp psoriasis.
Usage & Dosage
How to Apply Dovobet
Apply Dovobet (calcipotriol / betamethasone dipropionate) gel or ointment once daily to the affected psoriatic skin. Rub in gently. Use the minimum amount needed to cover the plaques.
For scalp psoriasis, apply the gel or foam formulation directly to the dry scalp, parting the hair to reach the skin. Allow it to dry before styling. Use once daily for up to four weeks.
Treatment Courses
Dovobet is for short courses, typically up to four weeks at a time. After a course, review with your doctor is recommended before continuing. It is not intended for continuous indefinite use. The maximum weekly dose is 15 g for face and skin folds, and 60 g for all body sites combined. Do not apply to the face, armpits, or groin without specific medical guidance.
Apply once daily for up to 4 weeks. Maximum: 100 g per week (body) or 60 g per week (scalp). After 4 weeks, a treatment break is recommended before repeating if needed.
Side Effects
Common Side Effects
- Itching at the application site
- Burning or stinging sensation
- Skin irritation or dryness
- Folliculitis (inflamed hair follicles)
- Skin thinning with prolonged use (from the betamethasone component)
Calcipotriol-Specific Effects
Dovobet contains calcipotriol (a vitamin D analogue), which can cause elevated blood calcium levels (hypercalcaemia) if used in excessive quantities or over very large body surface areas. Symptoms of raised calcium include thirst, increased urination, constipation, and confusion. Do not exceed the recommended weekly dose limits. Calcipotriol can also cause skin irritation on the face — this is why facial application requires specific medical guidance.
Warnings & Precautions
Do not exceed the weekly maximum dose, as calcipotriol can affect calcium metabolism at high doses. Avoid use on the face. Potent steroid component requires time-limited courses.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in pustular or erythrodermic psoriasis, disorders of calcium metabolism, severe renal or hepatic impairment, and known hypersensitivity to calcipotriol or betamethasone.
