About This Medicine
Elocon is a potent topical corticosteroid preparation containing mometasone furoate 0.1%, available as cream, ointment, and scalp lotion. It is used for the treatment of steroid-responsive inflammatory skin conditions including eczema (atopic dermatitis), contact dermatitis, seborrhoeic dermatitis, and psoriasis.
Why Mometasone is Distinctive
Mometasone furoate is classified as a potent topical corticosteroid, similar in strength to betamethasone valerate 0.1% (Betnovate) and clobetasone butyrate 0.05% (Eumovate is milder). What distinguishes mometasone is its high anti-inflammatory potency combined with relatively low HPA axis suppression and skin atrophy potential compared to many other potent steroids, due to its high receptor binding affinity and once-daily dosing. Once-daily application of Elocon often provides equivalent control to twice-daily application of other potent steroids.
Formulation Choice
The cream is most suitable for acute or weeping inflammatory skin conditions, while the ointment is preferred for chronic, dry, or lichenified (thickened) skin. The scalp lotion is formulated specifically for scalp conditions including seborrhoeic dermatitis, psoriasis, and lichen planopilaris.
Usage & Dosage
How to Apply Elocon
Apply a thin layer of Elocon cream, ointment, or lotion to the affected skin area once daily. Gently massage in until absorbed. Wash your hands before and after application unless the hands are the treated area. Unlike some other potent steroids that are applied twice daily, Elocon's high potency allows for once-daily dosing, which simplifies the regimen and may improve adherence.
Areas Requiring Extra Care
Avoid applying Elocon to the face, armpits, groin, and genitals except under specific dermatological supervision. Do not apply under occlusive dressings unless directed. Treatment courses should generally not exceed four weeks without dermatological review. For children, use the minimum amount for the shortest duration necessary under medical supervision.
Elocon is available as 0.1% cream, 0.1% ointment, and 0.1% scalp lotion in 30 g and 100 g packs. Apply once daily to affected areas. The scalp lotion is applied once daily to the affected scalp. Total body surface area treated should be minimised to reduce systemic absorption. Do not use in facial eczema routinely.
Side Effects
Local Side Effects
With appropriate use and treatment course duration, Elocon is well tolerated. With prolonged or excessive use, skin thinning (atrophy), striae (stretch marks), telangiectasia (visible blood vessels), perioral dermatitis, and steroid-induced acne or rosacea can develop. These risks are higher with facial or flexural use.
Systemic Side Effects
Although mometasone has a comparatively low HPA axis suppression profile among potent steroids, systemic absorption can still occur, particularly with large surface area application, use under occlusion, or application to thin or damaged skin. Adrenal suppression, Cushing's syndrome features, and growth retardation in children are possible with prolonged extensive use. Children are particularly susceptible due to their higher skin surface area to body weight ratio.
Warnings & Precautions
Do not use Elocon for infected skin conditions without concurrent appropriate antimicrobial treatment. Fungal infections may be masked and worsened by topical corticosteroids. Do not use on facial rosacea or perioral dermatitis. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Use with caution in children; potent corticosteroids should be used for the shortest possible period. Monitor for secondary infection during treatment.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to mometasone furoate or any excipient. Not for use in primary skin infections (bacterial, fungal, or viral), rosacea, perioral dermatitis, acne vulgaris, or pruritic conditions without underlying dermatosis. Do not apply to the ears if the eardrum is perforated.
