About This Medicine
Galantamine is the generic form of Reminyl, an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor for mild to moderately severe Alzheimer's disease. It increases acetylcholine availability in the brain and additionally modulates nicotinic receptors, which may provide complementary neuroprotective effects. Generic galantamine is bioequivalent to Reminyl.
Usage & Dosage
How to Take Galantamine
Take galantamine with food to reduce the chance of nausea. Immediate-release tablets are taken morning and evening; prolonged-release capsules are taken once daily in the morning. Treatment is always started at the lowest available dose and increased gradually over weeks, typically 4 mg twice daily for four weeks, then 8 mg twice daily for four weeks, and then if tolerated, 12 mg twice daily as the maintenance dose.
Gradual titration is important, increasing too quickly leads to more side effects. Take at consistent times each day, and continue even if improvement feels slow. Galantamine helps manage symptoms but does not alter the underlying progression of the disease.
Immediate-release: start at 4 mg twice daily for 4 weeks, then 8 mg twice daily, then 12 mg twice daily. Prolonged-release: 8 mg, then 16 mg, then 24 mg once daily, each for 4 weeks.
Side Effects
Common Side Effects
Common side effects, particularly during dose increases:
- Nausea and vomiting (most common, taking with food and increasing the dose slowly helps)
- Diarrhoea
- Dizziness
- Reduced appetite and weight loss
These effects are most pronounced during the titration period and tend to settle once a stable dose is reached. If side effects are severe or persistent, your doctor may pause the dose increase or temporarily reduce the dose.
Warnings & Precautions
Gradual dose titration minimises GI side effects. Monitor weight. Use with caution in cardiac conduction disorders and peptic ulcer disease.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in severe hepatic impairment, severe renal impairment, and known hypersensitivity to galantamine.
