Medical Information

About This Medicine

Levemir contains insulin detemir, a long-acting basal insulin analogue used in type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Insulin detemir binds to albumin in the subcutaneous tissue and bloodstream, prolonging its duration of action. It provides more predictable blood glucose control and less weight gain than NPH insulin. Depending on individual needs, Levemir is given once or twice daily.

Usage & Dosage

How to Use Levemir

Inject Levemir (insulin detemir) subcutaneously once or twice daily, at the same time(s) each day. It can be given in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Rotate injection sites with every dose within the same body area to reduce the risk of skin changes (lipodystrophy).

For those using Levemir once daily, the injection is usually given in the evening or at bedtime. When used twice daily, the second dose is typically given in the evening or at bedtime, 12 hours after the morning dose. Always carry fast-acting glucose with you in case your blood sugar drops too low.

Dose is individualised. Type 2: typically start at 10 units once or twice daily. Type 1: used alongside rapid-acting mealtime insulin. Some patients require twice-daily dosing for full 24-hour coverage.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects

Common side effects include:

  • Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), the main risk with any insulin. Symptoms include sweating, shaking, confusion, and rapid heartbeat. Treat immediately with fast-acting glucose
  • Injection site reactions (redness, swelling, bruising, or mild pain)
  • Lipodystrophy (thickening or dimpling of skin) at repeated injection sites
  • Weight gain (generally less than with NPH insulin)

Rotating injection sites consistently helps prevent lipodystrophy, which can affect how well the insulin is absorbed. If you notice lumps or changed skin texture at any injection site, speak to your diabetes team.

Warnings & Precautions

Check the label before each injection. Do not mix with other insulins. Dose adjustments during illness, travel, or activity changes.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in hypoglycaemia and known hypersensitivity to insulin detemir.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Levemir differ from Lantus?
Both are long-acting basal insulins. Lantus (glargine) has a slightly longer duration and is usually given once daily. Levemir (detemir) may require twice-daily dosing in some patients but is associated with less weight gain. Your prescriber will choose based on your individual needs.
