Medical Information
About This Medicine
Lyrica contains pregabalin, an anticonvulsant used for neuropathic pain, generalised anxiety disorder, and as adjunctive therapy for epilepsy. Like gabapentin, it binds to the alpha-2-delta subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels, but pregabalin has more predictable absorption and linear pharmacokinetics, resulting in a more consistent dose-response relationship. It is effective for diabetic neuropathy, post-herpetic neuralgia, fibromyalgia, and central neuropathic pain.
Usage & Dosage
How to Take Lyrica
Take Lyrica (pregabalin) two or three times a day, with or without food. Always start at a low dose and increase gradually over days to weeks, this helps your body adjust and reduces side effects. Swallow capsules whole with water.
Do not stop taking Lyrica suddenly. Stopping abruptly can cause withdrawal symptoms including insomnia, headache, nausea, diarrhoea, and anxiety. If you and your doctor decide to stop treatment, the dose should be tapered down slowly over a minimum of one week. Lyrica is a controlled drug (Class C in the UK) and should only be used as prescribed.
Neuropathic pain: start at 75 mg twice daily, increasing to 150 mg twice daily after 3 to 7 days. Maximum: 600 mg daily. Anxiety: 150 to 600 mg daily in 2 to 3 divided doses.
Side Effects
Common Side Effects
Common side effects include:
- Dizziness and drowsiness (very common, especially at the start)
- Weight gain
- Swelling of the hands or feet
- Blurred vision
- Dry mouth
These effects are most noticeable when starting treatment or increasing the dose. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how Lyrica affects you. The combination of pregabalin with alcohol, opioids, or other sedating medicines significantly increases the risk of respiratory depression and should be avoided.
Warnings & Precautions
Pregabalin is a controlled substance (Class C in the UK) due to misuse potential. Do not stop abruptly; taper over at least one week. May impair driving. Use with caution alongside opioids and CNS depressants.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in known hypersensitivity to pregabalin. Dose adjustment needed in renal impairment.
