Medical Information

About This Medicine

Malarone is the branded formulation of atovaquone/proguanil for malaria prevention and treatment. It is the most widely prescribed antimalarial for travellers, with a convenient dosing schedule: start just one to two days before travel, take daily during the stay, and continue for only seven days after returning. This shorter post-travel course compared to doxycycline and mefloquine is a significant advantage.

Usage & Dosage

How to Take Malarone

Take one tablet once daily with food or a milky drink, at the same time each day. Start taking Malarone 1 to 2 days before entering the malaria area, continue every day during your stay, and carry on for 7 days after returning home.

If you vomit within an hour of taking your tablet, take another dose as soon as possible. Try to take Malarone with a substantial meal or full-fat milk to improve absorption and reduce the chance of stomach upset. Consistency is key, take it at the same time each day without missing doses.

One adult tablet (250/100 mg) daily. Start 1 to 2 days before travel. Continue for 7 days after return.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects

Common side effects include:

  • Headache
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea

These are usually mild and settle after the first few days. Taking Malarone with food significantly reduces stomach symptoms. If you experience persistent or severe vomiting that prevents you from keeping the tablet down, seek medical advice, as malaria prevention may be compromised.

Warnings & Precautions

Take with food for adequate absorption. Not suitable for severe renal impairment. If vomiting occurs within one hour of taking, take a replacement dose.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in severe renal impairment (CrCl below 30) and known hypersensitivity to atovaquone or proguanil.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Malarone only taken for 7 days after travel?
Atovaquone/proguanil is active against both the blood and liver stages of the malaria parasite. By targeting parasites in the liver, it prevents them from establishing infection, allowing the post-travel course to be shorter than doxycycline (which requires 4 weeks post-travel).
