Medical Information

About This Medicine

Nizoral shampoo contains 2% ketoconazole, a broad-spectrum antifungal, for the treatment and prevention of dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis of the scalp. Ketoconazole targets the Malassezia yeast that plays a central role in these conditions. Regular use reduces flaking, itching, and scalp redness. Nizoral also has some efficacy against scalp psoriasis when used as an adjunct to other treatments.

Usage & Dosage

How to Use Nizoral Shampoo

Apply Nizoral (ketoconazole 2%) shampoo to wet hair. Massage into a lather and leave on the scalp for three to five minutes before rinsing thoroughly. Allow the shampoo to contact the scalp skin during the waiting period — not just the hair.

For treatment of dandruff or seborrhoeic dermatitis: Use twice weekly for two to four weeks. Most users see significant improvement within this period.

For prevention after treatment: Use once weekly or once every two weeks to maintain control and prevent recurrence. Many people need ongoing intermittent use to keep seborrhoeic dermatitis under control.

For pityriasis versicolor on the body: Apply to affected skin, leave for three to five minutes, then rinse. Use once daily for five days.

Treatment: use twice weekly for 2 to 4 weeks. Prevention: use once every 1 to 2 weeks. Leave on scalp for 3 to 5 minutes before rinsing.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects

Nizoral shampoo is generally well tolerated. Possible local effects include:

  • Scalp irritation or itching
  • Dryness of the scalp or hair
  • Changes in hair texture
  • Oily or dry hair

Hypersensitivity

Contact dermatitis or urticaria (hives) can occasionally occur if you are sensitive to ketoconazole or another ingredient in the shampoo. If you develop significant irritation, a spreading rash, or swelling, stop use and seek advice from your pharmacist or doctor. Avoid contact with the eyes — if this occurs, rinse thoroughly with water.

Warnings & Precautions

For external scalp use only. Avoid contact with eyes. If no improvement after four weeks, consider alternative diagnoses.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in known hypersensitivity to ketoconazole or any excipient.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Nizoral for hair loss?
While primarily an antifungal shampoo, some evidence suggests ketoconazole may have mild anti-androgenic effects on the scalp. It is sometimes used as an adjunct to finasteride or minoxidil for androgenetic alopecia, though this is not a licensed indication.
