About This Medicine
Progynova contains estradiol valerate, an ester of 17-beta estradiol that is converted to estradiol in the body. It is used for hormone replacement therapy to relieve menopausal symptoms. Progynova provides effective relief of hot flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, and mood disturbance. Women with an intact uterus must also take a progestogen.
Usage & Dosage
How to Take Progynova
Take one Progynova tablet once daily, with or without food, at the same time each day. If you still have a uterus, you will also need a progestogen (such as norethisterone or micronised progesterone) to protect the uterine lining, as oestrogen alone increases the risk of endometrial changes. Your prescriber will advise on the most suitable regimen.
Take your tablet at a consistent time each day. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for the next one, in which case just skip it and continue as normal. Do not double up to compensate.
Available in 1 mg and 2 mg strengths. Start at the lowest effective dose. Women with a uterus must take a progestogen for at least 12 days per cycle.
Side Effects
Common Side Effects
Common side effects include:
- Breast tenderness or swelling
- Headache
- Nausea
- Bloating
- Leg cramps
These are usually mild and often improve after the first few weeks of treatment. As with all oestrogen-based HRT, Progynova carries a small increased risk of blood clots and, with long-term use, certain hormone-sensitive conditions. Your doctor will discuss the individual benefits and risks with you and review treatment regularly.
Warnings & Precautions
Oral oestrogen carries a higher VTE risk than transdermal routes. Review HRT at least annually.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in known or suspected breast cancer, oestrogen-dependent malignancy, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, active VTE, active liver disease, and porphyria.
