Medical Information

About This Medicine

Scopoderm is a transdermal patch containing hyoscine (scopolamine) for the prevention of motion sickness. The patch delivers hyoscine through the skin over 72 hours, providing continuous protection during travel. Hyoscine is an anticholinergic that blocks signals from the vestibular system to the vomiting centre in the brain, preventing the nausea and vomiting triggered by motion.

Usage & Dosage

How to Apply Scopoderm

Apply one patch to a hairless area of skin behind the ear, at least five to six hours before travel (or the evening before a morning trip). Leave the patch in place for up to 72 hours. If you need cover beyond this, remove the old patch and apply a fresh one to the other ear.

Wash your hands thoroughly after handling the patch, and avoid touching your eyes before washing hands, as scopolamine accidentally transferred to the eye can cause temporary blurred vision or pupil dilation. Dispose of used patches carefully, folding them so the sticky side is hidden.

One patch (1 mg hyoscine, releasing approximately 1 mg over 72 hours). Apply 5 to 6 hours before the antiemetic effect is needed. Replace after 72 hours if needed.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects

Common side effects include:

  • Dry mouth (very common)
  • Drowsiness
  • Blurred vision
  • Dizziness
  • Skin irritation at the application site

These effects are related to the anticholinergic action of scopolamine. Avoid driving or operating machinery if you feel significantly drowsy. Do not use Scopoderm with alcohol or other sedating medicines, as this increases drowsiness. Wash your hands after handling the patch to avoid getting scopolamine in your eyes.

Warnings & Precautions

Wash hands after applying or removing the patch to avoid inadvertent eye contact, which can cause pupil dilation and blurred vision. Do not use in children under 10 years. May impair driving.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in narrow-angle glaucoma, paralytic ileus, pyloric stenosis, myasthenia gravis, and known hypersensitivity to hyoscine.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should I apply the patch?
Apply the patch at least five to six hours before you need protection, as it takes time for hyoscine to be absorbed through the skin. For best results, apply the evening before travel.
