About This Medicine
Soolantra cream contains 1% ivermectin for the topical treatment of inflammatory papules and pustules of rosacea. Ivermectin has both anti-parasitic effects (targeting Demodex mites, which are found in higher numbers in rosacea skin) and direct anti-inflammatory properties. Clinical trials have shown it to be more effective than metronidazole gel for papulopustular rosacea, with continued improvement over several months of use.
Usage & Dosage
How to Apply Soolantra
Apply a pea-sized amount of Soolantra (ivermectin) cream to each of the five areas of the face (forehead, chin, nose, and each cheek) once daily. Rub in gently until fully absorbed. Avoid the eyes, lips, and mucous membranes.
Soolantra should be used as a long-term treatment, improvement typically begins after the first four weeks and continues progressively over several months. Do not stop using it just because you see early improvement, as the treatment works best when used consistently.
Apply once daily for up to 4 months. Improvement is typically seen within 4 weeks, with maximum benefit at 3 to 4 months. Treatment can be repeated if rosacea recurs.
Side Effects
Side Effects
Side effects from Soolantra are generally mild and local:
- Burning or stinging sensation on application (usually brief)
- Skin dryness
- Itching at the application site
These effects are uncommon and tend to settle as the skin adjusts. Soolantra does not cause the skin thinning associated with topical steroids, making it suitable for long-term facial use. If you experience persistent irritation or worsening of skin symptoms, consult your prescriber.
Warnings & Precautions
For facial use only. Avoid contact with eyes. Use sunscreen, as rosacea skin is often sun-sensitive.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in known hypersensitivity to ivermectin or any excipient.
