About This Medicine
Spiriva Respimat delivers tiotropium via a soft-mist inhaler that produces a slow-moving aerosol cloud, making it easier to inhale correctly than pressurised metered-dose inhalers or dry-powder devices. The Respimat generates a fine mist without propellants, allowing more medication to reach the lungs. It is used for the maintenance treatment of COPD and as add-on therapy for asthma that remains uncontrolled on ICS/LABA.
Usage & Dosage
How to Use Spiriva Respimat
Inhale two puffs once daily at the same time each day. Point the Spiriva Respimat inhaler towards the back of your throat and press the dose-release button while inhaling slowly and deeply through your mouth. Hold your breath for 10 seconds after each puff, then breathe out slowly.
This is a maintenance inhaler, use it every day at the same time, whether or not you have symptoms. It is not a rescue inhaler and will not relieve sudden breathlessness. Rinse your mouth with water after use to reduce the chance of oral dryness.
Two puffs (2.5 mcg per puff, total 5 mcg) once daily. Do not exceed two puffs per day.
Side Effects
Common Side Effects
Common side effects include:
- Dry mouth (the most common side effect)
- Sore throat or pharyngitis
- Cough
- Sinusitis
As with all anticholinergic inhalers, Spiriva can occasionally cause urinary retention (difficulty passing urine), especially in men with an enlarged prostate, or worsen narrow-angle glaucoma. Seek prompt medical advice if you notice difficulty urinating or sudden eye pain with visual disturbance.
Warnings & Precautions
Not for acute bronchospasm. Avoid eye contact with the mist (risk of glaucoma). Use with caution in narrow-angle glaucoma and prostatic hyperplasia.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in known hypersensitivity to tiotropium, ipratropium, or atropine derivatives.
