About This Medicine
Testavan is a transdermal testosterone gel presented in a metered-dose pump for the treatment of male hypogonadism. Each pump actuation delivers a precise dose, allowing accurate dose titration. The gel is applied to the inner thighs, providing steady testosterone absorption. Testavan offers an alternative application site to shoulder/arm gels, which may be preferred for social or practical reasons.
Usage & Dosage
How to Apply Testavan
Apply Testavan gel to the clean, dry skin of the inner thighs once daily in the morning. Allow it to dry for three to five minutes before getting dressed. Wash your hands thoroughly after application.
Avoid contact between the application area and other people's skin until the area is dry or washed. Testosterone transfer to women, children, or unborn babies can cause harm. Showering before close physical contact with a partner minimises this risk. Do not apply to the genitals, armpits, or to broken skin.
Start at 23 mg testosterone (one pump actuation per thigh) once daily. Adjust based on serum testosterone levels after 2 to 4 weeks. Maximum: 69 mg daily.
Side Effects
Common Side Effects
Common side effects include:
- Skin reactions at the application site (redness or irritation)
- Acne
- Headache
- Raised PSA levels
- Polycythaemia (raised red blood cell count)
Regular blood tests are needed during Testavan treatment to monitor PSA, haematocrit, and testosterone levels. Tell your doctor if you notice mood changes, increased aggression, or sleep apnoea, as these may suggest the dose needs reviewing.
Warnings & Precautions
Risk of transfer to others through skin contact. Cover the application site with clothing. Monitor haematocrit, PSA, and liver function regularly.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in known or suspected prostate or breast cancer, severe cardiac, hepatic, or renal insufficiency, and in women.
