About This Medicine

Tetracycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used for acne, rosacea, and certain other bacterial infections. While newer tetracyclines like doxycycline and lymecycline have largely replaced it due to more convenient dosing and better absorption, tetracycline remains available and effective. It must be taken on an empty stomach and absorption is significantly reduced by dairy products, antacids, and iron supplements.

Usage & Dosage

How to Take Tetracycline

Take tetracycline on an empty stomach, at least one hour before or two hours after food. Do not take it with dairy products, antacids, iron supplements, or calcium-fortified foods, as these bind to the medication and significantly reduce its absorption. Drink a full glass of water with each dose and remain upright for at least 30 minutes afterwards to prevent oesophageal irritation.

Take at regular, evenly spaced intervals throughout the day to maintain consistent blood levels. Complete the full prescribed course even if symptoms improve before the end.

Acne: 250 to 500 mg twice daily. General infections: 250 to 500 mg four times daily. Duration depends on the condition.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects

Common side effects include:

  • Nausea or stomach upset
  • Diarrhoea
  • Photosensitivity (increased sensitivity to sunlight, use high-factor sunscreen and cover exposed skin)
  • Oesophageal irritation
  • Vaginal thrush

Photosensitivity is an important consideration with tetracycline. Avoid prolonged sun exposure and use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen daily during treatment. Tetracycline should not be taken by pregnant women or children under 12, as it can permanently discolour developing teeth.

Warnings & Precautions

Strict food and supplement avoidance is necessary for absorption. Causes photosensitivity; use sunscreen. Oesophageal ulceration can occur if taken lying down or with insufficient water.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in pregnancy, breastfeeding, children under 12, severe hepatic impairment, and known hypersensitivity to tetracyclines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is tetracycline harder to take than doxycycline?
Tetracycline has stricter absorption requirements: it must be taken on an empty stomach and interacts significantly with food, dairy, antacids, and iron. Doxycycline can be taken with food and has fewer absorption issues, making it more practical for most patients.
