Medical Information
About This Medicine
Toujeo contains insulin glargine at a concentration of 300 units/ml (three times more concentrated than Lantus). This higher concentration results in a smaller subcutaneous depot that dissolves more slowly, extending the duration of action beyond 24 hours and providing an even flatter, more stable insulin profile. Toujeo may reduce the risk of hypoglycaemia, particularly nocturnal hypoglycaemia, compared to standard insulin glargine.
Usage & Dosage
How to Use Toujeo
Inject Toujeo (insulin glargine 300 units/mL) subcutaneously once daily at the same time each day. It can be given in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Rotate injection sites with each dose. The SoloStar pen delivers doses from 1 to 80 units in single-unit steps.
Do not mix Toujeo with any other insulin. Unlike some other long-acting insulins, Toujeo cannot be mixed in the same syringe. It provides a more even insulin release than standard Lantus, which may result in a slightly lower risk of night-time hypoglycaemia for some patients.
Dose is individualised. When switching from Lantus, a one-to-one unit conversion is used, though some patients may require a slightly higher dose of Toujeo. Adjust based on blood glucose monitoring.
Side Effects
Common Side Effects
Common side effects include:
- Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), the primary risk with any insulin. Symptoms include sweating, shaking, confusion, and palpitations. Treat promptly with fast-acting glucose
- Injection site reactions (redness, bruising, or mild pain)
- Lipodystrophy (skin changes at repeated injection sites)
- Weight gain
Rotating injection sites consistently helps prevent lipodystrophy, which can affect insulin absorption. Always carry fast-acting glucose and make sure family members or carers know how to recognise and treat hypoglycaemia.
Warnings & Precautions
Not interchangeable with other insulin glargine products on a unit-for-unit basis. Always check the label. The SoloStar pen for Toujeo delivers in units of insulin, not volume.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in hypoglycaemia and known hypersensitivity to insulin glargine.
