About This Medicine
Zyban contains bupropion, a noradrenaline and dopamine reuptake inhibitor originally developed as an antidepressant (Wellbutrin), repurposed as a smoking cessation aid. It reduces nicotine cravings and withdrawal symptoms through its action on dopaminergic reward pathways. Zyban approximately doubles quit rates compared to placebo and is particularly useful for smokers who are concerned about weight gain on quitting, as bupropion has a weight-neutral or mildly weight-reducing effect.
Usage & Dosage
How to Take Zyban
Set your quit date and start Zyban (bupropion) one to two weeks before you plan to stop smoking. Take one 150 mg tablet once daily for the first six days, then increase to one tablet twice daily (at least eight hours apart). Do not take the second dose too close to bedtime, as Zyban commonly causes insomnia.
The recommended treatment course is seven to nine weeks. Continue taking Zyban after your quit date, it works by reducing cravings and the pleasurable effects of nicotine, and needs time to build up its effectiveness.
Days 1 to 6: 150 mg once daily. Day 7 onwards: 150 mg twice daily. Treatment duration: 7 to 9 weeks. Set a quit date within the first two weeks of treatment.
