About This Medicine
Anusol HC contains hydrocortisone acetate combined with zinc oxide, bismuth subgallate, bismuth oxide, balsam of Peru, and benzyl benzoate.
It is a prescription-strength preparation used for the short-term relief of symptoms associated with internal and external haemorrhoids (piles) and other anorectal conditions such as proctitis.
The hydrocortisone component provides anti-inflammatory and antipruritic action, reducing the swelling, redness, and itching that accompany inflamed haemorrhoidal tissue.
Zinc oxide acts as a mild astringent and protective barrier, while the bismuth salts contribute soothing and protective properties to the irritated mucosal surface.
Haemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels in or around the anus and lower rectum. They are extremely common, affecting an estimated 50 per cent of adults at some point.
Symptoms include pain, itching, bleeding during bowel movements, and prolapse of tissue through the anal canal.
Anusol HC is available as suppositories for internal haemorrhoids and as an ointment or cream for external use.
It is intended for short-term symptomatic relief while underlying causes, such as straining at stool, are addressed through dietary and lifestyle changes.
Usage & Dosage
For the ointment: apply a small amount to the affected area at night, in the morning, and after each bowel movement. Gently clean and dry the anal area before application.
For suppositories: insert one suppository into the rectum at night and in the morning, and after each bowel movement.
Do not use Anusol HC for more than seven days without medical advice, as prolonged use of topical corticosteroids in the anal area can cause skin thinning.
Wash your hands thoroughly before and after application.
Addressing the underlying cause of haemorrhoids is equally important. Eat a high-fibre diet, drink plenty of fluids, and avoid straining during bowel movements.
Ointment: apply sparingly to the affected area up to three times daily plus after each bowel movement. Suppositories: insert one suppository two to three times daily plus after each bowel movement.
Treatment duration should not exceed seven days without medical review.
Anusol HC is for adults only. It should not be used in children without specialist advice. No dose adjustment is required for elderly patients, but prolonged use should be avoided.
Side Effects
Local irritation, burning, or stinging at the application site may occur, particularly during the first few uses. These effects are usually mild and transient.
Prolonged use of the hydrocortisone component can cause skin thinning (atrophy) of the perianal skin, striae, and telangiectasia.
Rarely, contact dermatitis may develop in response to one of the formulation's ingredients, particularly balsam of Peru, which is a recognised skin sensitiser.
Systemic absorption of hydrocortisone from rectal application is generally negligible at recommended doses and durations.
However, extensive or prolonged use could theoretically lead to adrenal suppression.
Allergic reactions are uncommon but should be reported promptly.
Warnings & Precautions
Do not exceed seven days of continuous treatment without medical review. The perianal skin is thin and particularly susceptible to corticosteroid-induced atrophy.
If symptoms persist beyond a week, seek further investigation to exclude other anorectal conditions.
Balsam of Peru is a known contact allergen. If you develop worsening irritation or a rash during treatment, stop using the product and consult your prescriber.
Anusol HC should not be used if infection is present in the treated area unless an appropriate antimicrobial agent is also being used. Inform your prescriber if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Contraindications
Anusol HC is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any of its ingredients, including balsam of Peru.
It must not be applied to areas with untreated bacterial, viral, or fungal infections.
Do not use Anusol HC if you have tuberculosis affecting the treated area, or if there is significant rectal bleeding of unknown cause, as this may indicate a more serious condition requiring investigation.
