About This Medicine
Bettamousse is a topical corticosteroid foam containing betamethasone valerate, prescribed for inflammatory scalp conditions such as scalp psoriasis, seborrhoeic dermatitis, and severe scalp eczema.
The foam formulation is specifically designed for use on the scalp, where creams and ointments can be difficult to apply through hair without leaving a greasy residue.
Betamethasone valerate is a potent corticosteroid that reduces inflammation, redness, itching, and scaling by suppressing the local immune response in the skin.
The mousse vehicle spreads easily through hair, delivering the active ingredient directly to the affected scalp while minimising mess.
Patients often find foam preparations more cosmetically acceptable than traditional scalp applications.
Bettamousse is intended for short-term use to bring acute flares under control. Once symptoms have improved, treatment should be tapered and alternative maintenance strategies considered.
Prolonged use of potent corticosteroids on the scalp should be avoided due to the risk of local side effects.
Usage & Dosage
Shake the can well before use. Invert the can and dispense a small amount of foam onto a saucer or into the cap.
Apply the foam to the affected areas of the scalp using your fingertips, gently massaging it in. Use twice daily, morning and evening.
Do not apply to the face or other body areas unless directed by your prescriber.
Do not expose the can to heat or flame, as it contains a flammable propellant. Do not spray the foam directly onto the scalp from the can. Allow the foam to absorb before styling your hair.
Apply a small amount of foam to the affected scalp areas twice daily. A walnut-sized amount is usually sufficient for the entire scalp.
Treatment duration should generally not exceed four weeks without medical review. If there is no improvement after two weeks, consult your prescriber.
When symptoms improve, reduce application to once daily before stopping, to minimise the risk of rebound.
Side Effects
Common side effects include mild burning or stinging on application, which usually resolves quickly. Prolonged use may cause scalp thinning, folliculitis, or local hair changes.
Uncommon effects include stretch marks on the scalp margins and contact dermatitis.
Systemic absorption from scalp application is generally low, but prolonged or widespread use of potent steroids can occasionally suppress the adrenal axis, particularly in children.
Rare allergic reactions to the foam base may occur.
Warnings & Precautions
Bettamousse contains a potent corticosteroid and should be used for the shortest duration necessary. Do not use under occlusive dressings unless advised by your prescriber.
Avoid contact with the eyes and mucous membranes. If a secondary infection develops on the scalp, appropriate antimicrobial treatment should be started.
Children should be treated under specialist supervision, as they are more susceptible to systemic effects from topical steroids.
The can is pressurised and flammable; store below 25 degrees Celsius and keep away from naked flames.
Contraindications
Bettamousse is contraindicated in individuals with untreated bacterial, viral, or fungal scalp infections, acne of the scalp, rosacea, perioral dermatitis, or hypersensitivity to betamethasone valerate or any component of the foam.
It should not be used in children under one year of age.
