About This Medicine
MetroGel is a topical gel containing metronidazole, an antibiotic and antiprotozoal agent, prescribed primarily for the treatment of papulopustular rosacea.
Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory facial skin condition characterised by redness, visible blood vessels, and inflamed papules and pustules, predominantly affecting the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead.
Topical metronidazole has both antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.
While the exact mechanism in rosacea is not fully understood, it is believed to reduce the inflammatory component of the condition, decrease the population of Demodex mites that may play a role in rosacea, and scavenge reactive oxygen species that contribute to tissue damage.
MetroGel does not address the background redness or telangiectasia of rosacea, but it effectively reduces the number and severity of inflammatory papules and pustules.
MetroGel is applied once or twice daily and typically requires four to six weeks of consistent use before the full benefit becomes apparent.
It is often used as a maintenance treatment to keep rosacea flares under control over the long term.
Usage & Dosage
Wash the face with a mild, non-irritating cleanser and pat dry. Apply a thin layer of MetroGel to the entire affected area once or twice daily, as directed by your prescriber.
Avoid the eyes, mouth, and nostrils. Allow the gel to dry before applying moisturiser or sunscreen.
Regular daily use is essential, as the benefits build gradually over several weeks. Continue treatment as directed by your prescriber, even when the skin looks clearer, to prevent relapses.
If the gel causes significant irritation, reduce to once-daily application and consult your doctor.
Apply a thin layer to the affected facial areas once or twice daily. The usual treatment course is eight to twelve weeks, after which your prescriber will assess response.
Maintenance therapy at a reduced frequency may be recommended for recurrent rosacea.
There is no specific dose adjustment for age, renal, or hepatic impairment for topical use, as systemic absorption is minimal.
Side Effects
Common local side effects include mild dryness, burning, stinging, and redness at the application site, particularly during the first few days of treatment.
These effects are usually transient and settle with continued use. Uncommon effects include itching, skin irritation, and contact dermatitis.
Systemic side effects are very rare with topical metronidazole due to low absorption. If severe irritation or an allergic reaction occurs, discontinue use and consult your prescriber.
Warnings & Precautions
MetroGel is for external facial use only. Avoid exposure to strong sunlight and UV lamps during treatment, as rosacea-affected skin is particularly sun-sensitive. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily.
Avoid alcohol-based skincare products, harsh exfoliants, and astringents, as these may aggravate rosacea.
Although systemic absorption from topical metronidazole is minimal, the manufacturer advises avoiding the oral–topical combination in the first trimester of pregnancy.
Inform your prescriber if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
Contraindications
MetroGel is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to metronidazole, other nitroimidazole derivatives, or any excipient in the gel formulation.
There are no absolute systemic contraindications for topical use, but caution is advised in patients with blood dyscrasias or central nervous system disease, given the theoretical risk with systemic metronidazole exposure.
